Turquoise domes over clay-coloured masonry, and a sky falling from dusty green to sand. The Blue Mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif is one of Central Asia's most recognisable buildings. The city's name means "tomb of the exalted", and the mosque was raised around that very tomb.

The place is as known for its white doves as for its tiles. The story goes that any grey dove joining the flock turns white within forty days. Every spring the city gathers here for nowruz.
